Irregularity and You
I find the best things for me in resolving this rhythm-free problem is to drink lots of water, add Metamucil or generic fiber capsules and maybe some Magnesium gel-caps if things are still not cooperating. You do NOT want to be backed up for more than a couple of days. After that, the strain you can put your guts through trying to get some results can rip out your doctor’s carefully-placed stitches. Getting ahead of the problem is a lot better than being stuck “behind” the problem if you get my drift…
The quantities of these supplements you “need” will be directly proportional to the amounts of painkillers you take each day. If your painkiller requirements go up – or (preferably) down, your supplements will need the same kind of adjustments. This will be pretty obvious in short order if you miscalculate – or forget to recalculate…
Coffee is one of those other marvelous inventions that has the effect of getting your GI tract working in the morning. Also, exercise helps a lot. Make sure you clear any exercise through your doctor / rehab / PT people first.
For emergency nutrition when you either don’t have time for a “real” meal or you still don’t have the appropriate appetite level is Ensure – or Boost (gluten free). Both come in a variety of flavors, provide balanced nutrition in a small package and are good sources of protein. I am particularly partial to Ensure.
