Day 4 (Thursday) – Surgery Day Part Deux

Just to complicate things a bit, after we had started the ball rolling toward a late Spring scoliosis surgery, the thumb and forefinger of my right hand went numb.

Shit.

So next come a lot of tests to determine it was exactly what I told them it was: C5/C6.  So today’s surgery is pretty simple.  They slit my throat, retract everything in between my wrinkled neck and my spine and fuse these 2 vertebrae after making sure all the nerve roots are free and clear of obstruction.  And you have C56 – BINGO! (or would that be BINCO!)

The nice PT lady poked her head in the door really early and I was already up (some things never change).  We agreed to get an early start on PT, since today’s surgery would get  in the way of our usual schedule.  Anything I can do to shorten my time in the hospital — sign me up!

So I’m up to wash / brush at the sink and we’re off!  We do 2 separate 150′ walks with no stops, which I’m told is pretty remarkable.  I don’t know..  I just see what I can accomplish.

Surgery is scheduled for 11:30 am which comes and goes – and goes – and goes – and goes.

Until finally, around 3:30 they roll me over to pre-op.  All this is pretty easy when you’re already post-op.  It’s not like they need to jam any more lines into you (but boy am I ready to get rid of this Foley (and dreading it at the same time…)

The surgery finally starts around 5 pm and I’m not back in my room until after 9.  Well… at least I got in some PT in the morning.

Now some people might be pissed that they had to wait so long – or nervous about the eternally-extended start time.

Not this Little Black Duck!

My son had been out to stay with us during the surgery and scheduled to leave this afternoon.  As it turned out, we had more time together.  Could have had a lot more it any of us knew his flight would  be delayed several times from a 5 pm departure until after 9 pm.  Oh well…

I’m just happy I’m not the First patient who shoulda toined left at Albakoikee.  I’m pretty sure his / her day sucks considerably more.

Thanks so much for your kind words. I am feeline much better already and will be going home (no rehab) Yay Either tomorrow or Monday. If it weren’t for how hideously uncomfortable Baylor’s beds are. I’d want to stay longer. Now I think tomorrow sounds pretty good.
