Day 5 (Friday) – post Surgery Part Deux
I wake up with a slightly sore throat, but otherwise feeling pretty good and ready to do a couple of laps. Swallowing sucks. It hurts (not LOTS, but it’s sure uncomfortable) and every damned liquid I swallow seems to end up half down my windpipe. You don’t appreciate how much this particular little problem sucks until it’s gone on for several days…
And (this should have happened yesterday) it’s Turd-Day! Thursday / Turdday — get it?
Yep. After 5 days and every freakin’ thing they could think of to shove in my IV, down my gullet & up my Ass, Bingo! My gut is working again. I guess it needed a StayCay…
So finally, after 4 whole days, I finally get some food (Hello, Jason’s Deli? Can you run over a… Whaddya mean I can’t bring in real food! Have you actually Tasted yours? Now I don’t know if you’ve ever eaten hospital food, but it’s generally not very exciting. This is no exception. In fact, it’s pretty bad from a vegetarian standpoint.
Note to Baylor: How about taking a little pride in your kitchen / cafe and producing a higher quality product? The rest of the campus is world -class. How about bringing up the kitchen to match. I’ll tell you this much. I did NOT look forward to a single meal after the first one.
Oh. And while we’re on the topic of improvements… I’ve slept better on a gravel road than in your PCU beds. Finally, suffering all week on this hideous bed and thrashing for 2+ hours tonight trying to find some way to make anything acceptable, I covered the entire surface of the bed with pillows and then I could get to sleep. And I Hate soft mattresses.
And Friday is the first day we have visitors. I have Karen diverting requests for visitors until Friday so I can concentrate on resting and getting well. All of your friends / relatives / bill collectors desperately want to come hold your hand & bring you some cheap crap — er — carefully-chosen gifts to cheer you up As Soon As Possible. But is this in the Patient’s best interest? Not Generally. Unless they’ve baked a batch of those special brownies (and enough to share) run ’em off and let the patient rest. They have a lot of work to do in the process of getting better. You especially don’t want some well-meaning friend bringing you a lovely upper respiratory infection to go along with whatever else brought you to the hospital in the first place.
So this was also the first day we had visitors. After which my wife goes out to dinner with family and leaves me to my own devices.
She should know better after all these years…
And now for some Fun.
