For me. Diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 12 or 13 by a Chiropractor in Crescent City, California, I really had no appreciation for the long-term issues that go along with this deformity. And as a result, I lived my life like there was no tomorrow and did pretty much anything and everything I wanted without regard to the effect on my twisted spine. There is a definite up-side to this, such as: the one thing my tombstone will Not have on it is… A Bucket List.

First Sign of Trouble

As a roadie for The Grateful Dead at the age of 18, a shot of pain like I had never imagined, sliced through the middle of my back. Searing, blinding white-hot pain that showed no sign of abating any time soon.

WTF?

The first of many nexus points, that’s WTF…

Damn! This was a whole new experience for me. You know how teenagers think they’re bullet-proof? Well, I found out I wasn’t in a very educational collision with the side of an Econoline van at the age of 16. Sure, arthritis is missing a lot of fun components (like ALL of them) but it did keep me from being shoved into the jungle with a target on my back somewhere north of Da Nang…

Knowhattamean?

Bad Habits

Skip ahead a few years past living in LA, working in Production for JBL & being a Technical Engineer for Motown Records. It’s the Mid-70s and while horsing around with a friend & running half a block, I feel like I’m about to hack up a lung… OK. Right? So this was another nexus point. The exact point in time where I became aware of my lack of fitness. More like wimpness, actually. And I decided I wanted to get in shape. But might this 2-1/2 pack-a-day habit get in the way? Or have something to do with my inability to run across the street?

Nah!

But let’s not rush into anything here, shall we?

So fast-wind ahead about a year to 1976 in Marin County, where we had relocated. I walk into a Karate dojo in San Rafael one sunny afternoon and inquire about taking lessons. The big burly black belt who’s job it is to turn wimps into welterweights pokes the bulge in my shirt pocket and says “The first thing you have to do is get rid of these.”

“What a crock…” I think to myself as I trudge back down the stairs with my tail between my legs.

And this is the third nexus point. Where I decide I do need to quit this nasty habit, get rid of the persistent smoker’s cough and improve my chances of surviving past 40. So after some false starts, I quit cold turkey and, after being a complete asshole for about 2-3 weeks and gaining 20 pounds seemingly overnight, I’m fairly clean. No more cigarettes – and my charcoal-colored lungs are working their way back to a pretty pink.

Physical Conditioning

And back I go to the same dojo as before, where I sign up for some serious abuse. Also known as Kyokushinkai Karate. Where I learn the fine – and not-so-delicate aspects of this martial art + a few more. This is where I learn that arthritis is not something I have to succumb to. This is where I learn to take control of my health and my world. Where I learn how not to be a victim in more ways than one. For ten years I learn – and teach several martial arts, from Karate to Kung Fu, Judo, Tai Chi and a few more. For the entire Summer of 1976, I rode my bike 8 miles to the dojo every day, worked out for 8 hours, biked back 8 miles and did 300 sit-ups plus 300 pushups (every single day). At one point I had an 18″ neck, 17″ biceps and 14″ forearms – and a Black Belt. I ran 5 miles eery day before dawn and ran a 10k every Saturday up an 1800 foot mountain. Great view of the entire Bay Area from the top of Mount Burdell.

Skiing was something I took up in my 30s, so that our kids could have the opportunity I never had. I became a Black Diamond skier in short order and loved tearing down the steepest slopes (also with amazing views – of Lake Tahoe) and kept my arthritis in check – rather than it keeping me in check.

SCUBA diving was another activity I’d wanted to try for my entire life and in 1997 I made it another achievement realized. I found I loved diving and we took advantage of numerous opportunities to dive Tahiti, Monterey and Cozumel. Again, keeping my arthritis in check, rather that vice versa. Among my many certifications are Certified Rescue Diver and Master SCUBA Diver (a pretty handy guy to have around in an emergency…)

Skydiving at the age of 50 was a lot of fun, but with my spine in such delicate condition, continuing to jump out of perfectly good planes seemed like a less-than brilliant idea. (I think it was Methodone that had that effect. But the Fentanyl patch was similar + headaches…) So we had to find pain relief that didn’t either give me headaches, knock me out or piss me off. My system is fairly sensitive to these drugs it seems.

For years I got by on Norco, a combination of Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen. The problem with large dosages of these, as any Doctor will tell you, is that your liver is going to be fairly pissed off at massive doses of Tylenol collecting in it’s filtering mechanism. And if you overwork it enough… It will just up and quit. Kind of like a pissed-off employee. So… We eventually went to a time-release Morphine to establish a baseline, plus short-acting Norco as needed throughout the day. The problem will all these things is that eventually your receptors become conditioned to the drugs and it’s just not as effective anymore. So a few months ago we switched over to the dreaded (dum dum da DUMMMMM)

Oxycontin

Damn.

I HATE Oxycontin! I will NEVER understand why people use this shit recreationally. Not that I don’t appreciate the recreational use of pharmaceuticals (and I’m not going to discuss that any further) but this stuff is NASTY. It just makes me feel B.A.D. in general. For the first 3 weeks I had low-grade headaches – and just generally felt Wrong Not right (“He just ain’t raht”). And then there are the side-effects of all this stuff coursing through your bloodstream. Like constipation.

Swell.

Constipation

Battling this little problem for several years makes you an expert on the topic. Problem is, when you change your dosage of painkillers (more on bad days – less on good days) your requirements for Fiber Supplements / Magnesium / Stool Softeners / Enemas / Gerbils and Small Explosives vary as well. You can imagine the results of a mis-calculation in either direction for any of these solutions, right?
